BUDDHA*S ENLIGHTENMENT
go for Refuge to the Buddha,His Teachings and His Sangha-community of virtuous Friends. With Buddhist ethic we can understand that each set of Vows support the other and is natural continuation of the other. There is no contradiction between them. In OBF International we don´t think that there are two or more Sanghas : monastic & non-monastic. True Sangha is only One: the Sangha of the Buddha. In OBF monastics are not more important as non-monastics. In Brahma Net Sutra it is said: THE ...

Tezuka's Epic About Buddha
From the display about Tezuka's epic multi-volume manga about the life of Buddha
In Buddha's hand
In the 14th century A.D., King Sri Indrathit declared Sukhotai's liberation from the Khmer and adopted a form of Buddhism based on the Sri Lankan school. During this period, Sukhothai Art developed a radically different appearance to Mon and Khmer styles.
The differences can be seen in the 'Walking Buddha' an original creation of the Sukhothai School. The inspiration for this new style came from the 'Mahapurislaksana Text' (Features of the great man), which developed the idea of idealistic and superhuman characteristics and expressed the power of compassion and serenity.
Such development have made Sukhothai Art worthy of high praise as...
about Buddha
Leshan Buddha
This is the biggest buddha statue in the world.
Some people have asked for more information about this Buddha, so here's all I know.
It's in Leshan, Sichuan, South West China. It's more than 1000 years old and was commission by a Buddhist monk called Haitong to try and calm the waters of a notorious river below it where many sailors lost their lives. It took about one hundred years to carve. It's 71 metres high (or approximately 232 feet tall).
It's a very popular tourist spot. You can get boats past it on the river for a full view or you can climb down the cliff staircase to see it from both the head and the feet. There are...

The building is 84 feet tall, contains 24,000 square feet of space and can accommodate 2,000 people in the main hall.
Seen Inside the Hall is a 37-foot statue of the Buddha Vairocana - the largest Buddha statue in the Western hemisphere.
Encircling the large statue are 10,000 small statues of the Buddha on a lotus terrace.
Surrounding the pedestal of of the Great Buddha Statue are 12 bas-reliefs of Bodhisattvas. A mural 8...

Buddha image with the posture of Calling the Earth to witness (or 'Subduing Mara')
The most common attitude of a seated Buddha image is the attitude of subduing Mara. In this attitude the Buddha is seated with the legs crossed, the right hand is on the right knee with the four fingers pointing to the ground, while the left hand rests in the lap. This is also known as the attitude of calling the Goddess of the Earth to witness. This is related to the time when the Lord Buddha was about to attain his enlightenment. He was attacked by Mara (a personification of evil) and his army. The Lord Buddha summoned the Goddess of the Earth to witness the attack and to save him by pointing the four fingers of the right hand to the...
The Great Buddha Hall
This magnificent building, at the Chuang Yen Monastery in Kent, New York, is in the style of architecture of the Tang Dynasty (618 AD - 907 AD) The building is 84 feet tall, contains 24,000 square feet of space and can accommodate 2,000 people in the main hall. Inside the Hall is a 37-foot statue of the Buddha Vairocana - the largest Buddha statue in the Western hemisphere.
The construction of the Great Buddha (inside) and the building took 8 years. The Great Buddha had to be complete before the building was, otherwise, it would be very difficult to bring a huge Buddha into the building. Designer and builder, Professor C.G. Chen, spent 2...

Just peeking into one of the praying Buddhas inside the 72 bell-shaped stupas dotting around the uppermost level of Borobudur somehow gives you a sense of serenity. A demand characteristic perhaps from all that we have learned about Buddha? I wonder what the indoctrinated will react in seeing the image.
The back story of its construction is no less intriguing. Built in the late 9th century by the Hindu rulers of Central Java, Borobudur rose almost simultaneously with the majestic Hindu temple of
Prambanan (next picture). Strangely, Borobudur is a testament to family squabbles...

Secret 25: I have a growing collection of Buddhas.
No, I'm not Buddhist - I'm Baptist. Well, that's what I was raised anyway. I'm not sure what I am anymore. There is just something so peaceful about Buddha. I love his face - so serene. And I love the reason why, in many statues that you see, there is no right hand. Because the Buddha was peace-loving, and because warriors carried their sword in their right hand, so in representations of Buddha many times, there will not be a right hand, in order to denote that he comes in peace, not carrying a weapon.
Just a little early morning trivia, and I apologize if there are numerous typos...
Buddha Eyes
John was recently in Nepal & he had these earings made for me. They are silver with my birthstone, garnet. This symbol represents the all seeing eyes of Buddha. The small dot depicted between the eyes represents the third eye, a symbol of spiritual awakening. The curious squiggle between the eyes is the Sanscrit numeral one, and symbolizes the unity of all things. For 52 weeks about U week 5
