Why there was a 400 year-old conspiracy to hide the true author? dedication lavished on the wrong man must be defended, at all costs it seems. Reputations tremble, an industry turns pale, and the weapons of ridicule and abuse are leveled and fired. But at least the battle lines have been drawn, and it is heartening to see how many recruits are enlisting in the Doubters Army: people, like myself, who cannot reconcile the illiteracy of Shakspere's offspring alongside his own deep and adept knowledge of medicine, art, music, geography, law and his ...

The Beard of Avon/Twelfth Night Darius Pierce Brent Harris
Edward de Vere (Brent Harris) "inspires" Will Shakspere (Darius Pierce) in Portland Center Stage's production of Amy Freed's The Beard of Avon, in repertory with Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, on the Main Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, January 15 - March 9, 2007.
The Beard of Avon/Twelfth Night Harris, Halstead, Pierce
Edward de Vere (Brent Harris) intercedes on Shakspere's (Darius Pierce) behalf as Queen Elizabeth (Carol Halstead) would rather have off with his poorly schooled head in Portland Center Stage's production of Amy Freed's The Beard of Avon, in repertory with Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, on the Main Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, January 15 - March 9, 2007.
Sir Thomas Smith, St Michael’s, Theydon Mount
The chancel of St Michael’s is crammed with the spectacular monuments of the Smith family. The picture above is Sir Thomas, the one below is Sir William Smith and wife (1626). Sir Thomas was born in Saffron Walden and was a fellow of Queens College, Cambridge. He was an eminent scholar and an early convert to the Protestant cause. This led to a public career as Secretary of State under Edward VI and the loss of his posts during the reign of Catholic Queen Mary. He rose to prominence again under Elizabeth and became one of her most trusted counsellors. Elizabeth asked Sir Thomas to take charge of the orphaned Edward De Vere, the...

Sorry folks, but when it comes to images of The Bard, I'll take this likeness any day over the much ballyhooed new portrait. This plastic replica sits proudly atop my bureau, and was given to me as a tongue-in-cheek wedding gift by a friend who is tickled by the fact that I spent two years out of my life earning an M.A. in Shakespeare.
Most recent news stories accompanying the freshly unearthed “pin-up” portrait of the Bard seem to be displayed in tandem with a bearded and beaming Stanley Wells, chairman of the Shakespeare Trust. Though undeniably a reliable and knowledgeable Shakespearean scholar, Well’s worship of a prettied up...
William Stanley, great-grandson of Princess Mary Tudor
William Stanley, 6th Earl of Derby (1561 – 29 September 1642) was an English nobleman.
He was a son of Henry Stanley, 4th Earl of Derby and Lady Margaret Clifford. His mother was heiress presumptive of Elizabeth I of England from 1578 to her own death in 1596.
His maternal grandparents were Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland and Lady Eleanor Brandon. Eleanor was the third child of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk and Mary Tudor. Mary was the fifth child of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York.
He married Elizabeth de Vere, daughter of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford and Anne Cecil. The latter's maternal grandparents...
Shakespeare memorial - his widow said that the bust didn’t even look like him! *tisk*
Speculation: Edward de Vere? Catholic? bisexual?
Inscription (modern spelling and punctuation):
Stay, passenger, why goest thou by so fast?
Read, if thou canst, whom envious Death hath placed
Within this monument: Shakespeare, with whom
Quick nature died, whose name doth deck this tomb
Far more than cost, since all that he hath writ
Leaves living art, but page, to serve his wit.
Who was Shakespeare? Some Unanswered Questions
The very last exhibit at the Globe Exhibition listed three other authors as the "main contenders" to be the real Shakespeare - Christopher Marlowe, Edward de Vere and Francis Bacon. I was searching for some evidence of the debate the whole time I was there, thinking of my amazing English teacher in high school, Larry Lifton, who was passionate about "Shakspear not Shakespeare" and inspired my love of the author and English literature in general.

On the eve of another birthday, Edward de Vere, the scandalous Earl of Oxford (Brent Harris) blends his own morose melancholy with inspiration from a more-than-enamored young Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southhampton (John Wernke), to arrive at the scheme of sharing his unmatched wisdom and passion with the world, without besmirching his station, by ghost-writing for the theater in Portland Center Stage's production of Amy Freed's The Beard of Avon, on the Main Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, January 15 - March 8, 2008. Having disguised herself as a common bawd-about in an effort to lure her husband back to Stratford, Anne Hathaway (Catherine Lynn Davis) finds herself in a dangerous liaison with Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford - and the man behind her husband's quill pen - (Brent Harris) in Portland Center Stage's production of Amy Freed's The Beard of Avon, on the Main Stage, Gerding Theater at the Armory, January 15 - March 8, 2008.

History of the mount
The Mount may be the Mictis of Timaeus, mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia (IV:XVI.104), and the Ictis of Diodorus Siculus. Both men had access to the now lost texts of the ancient Greek Geographer Pytheas, who visited the island in the fourth century BCE. If this is true, it is...

Both men had access to the now lost texts of the ancient Greek Geographer Pytheas, who visited the island in the fourth century BCE. If this is true, it is one of the earliest identified locations in the whole of western Europe and particularly on the island of Britain.
It may have been held by a religious body in the time of Edward the Confessor and given by...
