Albert Einstein

Original footage ... thanks to the efforts of the whole community *) it was finally possible to "decipher" what Einstein is saying: "Now I will add a few words unprepared. [laughter] A country becomes really a soul only in consciously serving the intellectual life, and in the case of our Jewish people it was really this endeavour, which conserved the Jewish people as a whole. We would not be in existence today, as a community of people, without this continued, or discontinued ... ehh ... activity into learning and in thought and in literature." The occasion of this speech is still unknown, though. *) Thanks to rubyslippez, ElmaFudd2...

Simultaneity - Albert Einstein and the Theory of Relativity

Imagine two observers, one seated in the center of a speeding train car, and another standing on the platform as the train races by. As the center of the car passes the observer on the platform, he sees two bolts of lightning strike the car - one on the front, and one on the rear. The flashes of light from each strike reach him at the same time, so he concludes that the bolts were simultaneous, since he knows that the light from both strikes traveled the same distance at the same speed, the speed of light. He also predicts that his friend on the train will notice the front strike before the rear strike, because from her perspective on the...

The life of Albert Einstein - part 1

He is best known for his theory of relativity and specifically mass-energy equivalence, E = mc2. Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect." Einstein's many contributions to physics include his special theory of relativity, which reconciled mechanics with electromagnetism, and his general theory of relativity, which extended the principle of relativity to non-uniform ...

Time Dilation - Albert Einstein and the Theory of Relativity

Two spaceships are traveling together through the galaxy at close to the speed of light. Mounted on one ship is a laser that can fire pulses of light, and on the other, a mirror. The pilot of the first ship fires a pulse at the mirror, and watches as it is reflected back. A clock on board measures how long the round trip takes. But now suppose that he does this as the ships are passing an observer on a nearby asteroid. According to relativity theory, this observer sees the pulse moving ...

Interior full of stunning wood carving, some dating back to the 15th century, and amazing stained glass windows. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm - another little known fact about this town of 120,000 in Baden-Württemberg, south-west Germany.

Comments: from Galileo to Einstein

Scene is Françoise Balibar (Université Paris-Diderot, France) IYA2009 Opening Speech from Françoise Balibar: Four hundred years ago Galileo Galilei, by pointing his telescope at the Moon and planets in the night sky, and highly influenced by Copernicus’s train of thought, made the observations that abolished the previously well-established cosmic separation between the Earth (a place for decay, death and sin) and the Heavens (a world of intrinsic and absolute perfection). As Koyré put it, humanity had taken a definite step towards emancipation — from a closed world, enclosed in a crystal sphere, rotating about a centre, to an infinite...

162.365 Pi day

happy pi day... for all of you nerds and those of you with a little extra appreciation for mathmatical constants. i tried to make the symbol pi with some sprinkles on a piece of marbled cheesecake brownie.... kind of hard to see. heh. oh well, i tried. yeah i know, i'm supposed to make a pie for pi day, but i didn't feel like being that corny. besides. brownies are delicious. facts about pi: Pi Day and Pi Approximation Day are two holidays held to celebrate the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in American date format), due to π being equal to roughly 3.14. Sometimes it is celebrated on March 14 at...

Where did it all come from?

Scene and Information from Perry Marshal: Without a doubt, the biggest question in science is, “Where did it all come from?” Brilliant minds have expressed every conceivable opinion. But is there a consensus? What does the very best information from science tell us? Because of all the new research that is coming in every week, I've written a five-day series of emails. We explore the fascinating beginnings of the universe, and what eminent scientists like Albert Einstein and astronomer Robert Wilson have to say about it. Information from Shahidur Rahman Sikder: As a result of the progress of the civilization in the present situation, it...

Bhagawan -- Majestic Pose

EINSTEIN THE SUPREME SCIENTIST AND BABA THE AVATAR Mark R. Abrams, Vermont, USA In August 1989 Bhagavan invited our group of twenty one Americans for an interview. I resolved that, with His Grace, I would leave it knowing more about my connection to Einstein. Again, I had an opportunity to pose my question about the meaning of my relationship to Einstein. I took the opportunity, and Swami revealed some personal information that I will ponder for some time to come. Swami then went on to say the following to the group: "Einstein is a body. That body is dead. He was a very good man. Einstein was very patient. Peace, Peace, Peace....
